ABOUT THE PEER TUTOR POSITION: Peer Tutors at Capital University conduct both individualized and small group tutoring sessions face-to-face and online focused on helping students better understand course content and develop improved study strategies to become more confident, independent learners.
Their year-long commitment consists of four main responsibilities: 1. Provide individualized and small group tutoring assistance for subjects in which the tutor has earned a B+ or higher 2. Peer Tutors are also expected to promote Academic Success services, collaborate with faculty, and regularly refer students to other appropriate University resources as needed 3. Participate in ongoing training and professional development 4. Perform required administrative tasks
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: - Sophomore rank or above at the time of employment - Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA - Must be available to work at least 5-10 hours each week - Commitment for at least a year (both Fall and Spring semesters) based on job performance and need - Presently in good standing with the University
PREFERABLE SKILLS: - Passion in helping others achieve their goals - Ability to work under minimal supervision - Willingness to improve based on feedback - Strong communication and interpersonal skills - Respect towards academic confidentiality and integrity - Adaptability when working with others BENEFITS TO THIS POSITION: - Further development of highly transferable job skills, such as interpersonal communication, professional collaboration, adaptability to day-to-day needs, problem-solving, etc. - Selecting your own hours weekly - Strengthening your own knowledge of course concepts by reciprocally helping others, which is transferable to one’s career REQUIRED PRE-SERVICE TRAINING: Much of the training for this position will occur asynchronously online over the summer, with in-person synchronous training later on. We will convey more information about this training once applicants are accepted into this position. Failure to satisfactorily complete both of these trainings will result in not being hired for the 2023-2024 academic year. TUTORING AREAS: While Academic Success maintains a large staff of tutors who can assist students in a wide range of subjects, higher priority will be given to hiring applicants who are qualified to tutor one or more of the following higher-demand subject areas such as business, biology, chemistry, math, nursing, physics, psychology, and more.
