Description

Student Research Advisors (SRA) staff the Research Help Desk and assist patrons with basic research questions, circulation functions, and other queries. The SRA is expected to develop a broad range of research skills across various subjects, assist librarians with special projects, and provide outstanding customer service. This is an excellent position for a student who has worked as a Student Circulation Assistant and who meets the required qualifications.

Responsibilities

Provides outstanding service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors; responds to questions and complaints professionally and in accordance with library policy; Responsible for assisting patrons with research and other questions at the Research Help Desk, over the phone, and via email or chat using the library’s physical and digital resources; uses good judgement to make referrals to library or campus staff; Assists librarians with special projects; pulls materials for evaluation and assists with deselection as directed; uses the Integrated Library System (ILS) to create lists and run other reports as directed; creates and maintain monthly thematic displays according to guidelines; Assists with basic circulation functions; uses the Integrated Library System (ILS) to assists with library card accounts and resolve account questions in a friendly and efficient manner; accurately maintains new and existing patron records; Accurately records statistics; Proactively ensures a neat, tidy, and welcoming environment; Cares for the entire collection by shelf-reading, shifting, and straightening.

Qualifications

Must be a junior, senior, or graduate student, or have equivalent number of college credits; must have prior experience using library research databases; previous library work experience preferred; Must be curious and enjoy learning new skills; must enjoy working with and helping people; Strong communication and interpersonal skills ; Must be punctual and reliable; work availability must coincide with department and scheduling needs; Must be able to learn and efficiently use the ILS and other common software and hardware; ; must be able to learn and correctly apply the Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress, and other classification schemes as needed; Strong attention to detail; 1Ability to work independently; ability to understand and proactively solve problems; Must be able to maintain confidentiality of patron records. Physical Requirements: Regularly requires pushing carts of books, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 20 lbs Requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
