Hamma Library Assistant in Training

Responsibilities

Hamma Library is the theological library of Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University. Student Library Assistants support daily library operations at the Circulation Desk, assist patrons, maintain the collection, and contribute to a professional academic library environment. This is a working position in a distinctive library, well suited to students who are curious, service-oriented, and ready to engage. Staffing the Circulation Desk and greeting patrons warmly and professionally Checking library materials in and out for a range of patron types using the Alma library system Answering patron questions and referring patrons to the librarian when appropriate Answering the phone and managing basic communications from the desk Shelving, shelf-reading, and general collection maintenance Supporting digitization, cataloging, or other library projects as assigned Opening or closing the library according to established procedures Maintaining a welcoming and orderly library environment Taking initiative during slow periods; there is always something useful to be done

Qualifications

Currently enrolled at Capital University or Trinity Lutheran Seminary Reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently Genuine service orientation and the kind of curiosity that makes quiet moments productive Willingness to take initiative without being asked Interest in theology, religious studies, education, or library and information science is a plus, not a requirement Prior library experience welcome but not expected; we train the right person Must be able to bend, lift, and move through the stacks

Students who engage seriously with this position leave with more than a line on a resume. Hamma Library offers hands-on experience with professional library systems, collection management, and patron services in a specialized theological library context. Working knowledge of Library of Congress Classification, Alma, and OhioLINK are among the practical skills student workers develop here. The Head Librarian is an active professional who presents at national conferences and publishes, and who takes student development seriously. Mentorship is available to those who seek it. This is not a typical student job, and we are looking for students who understand the difference.
